The northwest art community lost a great painter when Michael Dailey passed away in August 2009. This memorial exhibition will feature both recent and earlier paintings on canvas and mixed media works on paper. Dailey was known for his subtle, abstract interpretations of sea, land, and sky, alluding to atmosphere and light through delicate variations of color. He was a master colorist, cultivating an expansive use of color ranging from deep blues, greens and pale peaches to creams and grays. His luminous creations are like no other.
Originally from Iowa, Michael Dailey made Seattle, Washington his home since 1963. Solo shows included those at the State University of New York; the University of Wisconsin, Madison; and the Tacoma Art Museum, Washington as well as regular exhibitions at the Laura Russo Gallery in Portland, and the Francine Seders Gallery in Seattle. Dailey's work is in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; the Seattle Art Museum, Washington; the Portland Art Museum, OR; and the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland. Corporate collections include the Bank of America Collection, San Francisco, California; Hilton Hotel Corporation, Portland, Oregon; Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon; and Safeco Insurance Company, Seattle, Washington. He was honored in 2008 with a retrospective exhibition at the respected Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Salem, OR.

acrylic on canvas
57" x 44"
Throughout Michele Russo’s life, he centered his attention on the human condition and consequently the ideals of man. In his art, he considered humanity in both its whimsy and its foibles. Stylistically, he developed an interest in the figure and a distinctive simplicity of form and line early on. He is best known for his paintings of the female nude in a variety of poses and settings. His figures, removed from specific meaning, go beyond the confines of the canvas to evoke universal qualities. This exhibition presents works from the estate.
Michele Russo made significant contributions to the Northwest throughout his life. After graduating from Yale in 1934 and marrying fellow artist, Sally Haley he arrived in Portland in 1947. He taught at the Pacific Northwest College of Art for over 25 years and became an active advocate for the arts during the politically charged 1950s. He was a founder of the Portland Center for the Visual Arts and was the first artist appointed to the Metropolitan Arts Commission in the 1970s. Throughout his career, Michele Russo’s work has been in major exhibitions nationally and is in many public and private collections. Russo was honored with a fifty-year retrospective at the Portland Art Museum in 1988.
