Drawing on recognizable human and natural forms, Manuel Izquierdo brought a distinctly modern and abstract vision to his artmaking. His visual language flowed gracefully from two to three dimensional forms. Iconic females, flower and plant forms, warrior men and myriad other themes can be found in sculpture and two-dimensional works alike. Izquierdo’s calligraphic drawn lines might be translated into sensual shapes made of bronze or wood, or his sculptural vision was channeled into the tactile woodblock used for printmaking. In addition to his work as a sculptor, Izquierdo was well known for his woodcuts. Sculptures ranging from large to small and a selection of prints and drawing will be included in this exhibition.
Originally from Spain, but a long-time Portland icon, Manuel Izquierdo died in July of this year. He was born in Madrid in the 1920s, and came to the United States as a teenager, settling in Portland, Oregon. In 1951, he graduated from the Museum Art School (now Pacific Northwest College of Art), and soon after became a professor there. Inspired by trends in art such as Abstract Expressionism, Cubism, and Realism, Izquierdo channeled much of his energy into sculpture and printmaking. He was honored with a ten year retrospective at the Portland Art Museum in 1967.

Washington glass artist David Schwarz is fascinated with the use of optics and perspective.
The blown and cut glass orbs he creates reflect and refract mysterious and beautiful shapes and colors. His illusionary play with line, color and form lets us into a private and intimate kaleidoscopic space. Scientific and organic in their essence, these jewel-like, weighty shapes mesmerize and seduce in their presence.
Born in Vancouver, WA in 1952, Schwarz received a Masters in Science/Glass from Illinois State University in the early 1980s. From 1979 to 1986, he taught at the Pilchuck Glass School while developing his distinctive style. Since that time, Schwarz has been a full time artist working at his studio in Ridgefield, WA. His work is included in such collections as Corning Museum of Glass, NY; Milwaukee Museum of Art, WI; Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington DC; the High Museum, Atlanta, GA; and the Hunter Museum of Art, Chattanooga, TN. He has shown his sculpture in solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally since 1980. In 2008, Schwarz was featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Oregon Art Beat.
